Poverty is caused by a tangled mess of different factors. It would take years before we can fully eradicate this social problem. But, we at Project PEARLS believe that we can still do something to alleviate the problem – especially for children.
Last July 2015, Project PEARLS launched the “Daily Soup Kitchen” to provide healthy breakfast to poor children in Helping Land, Tondo, Manila. Most of the families in this community are living in extreme poverty and their main source of livelihood is scavenging from garbage. Aside from scavenging for recyclable materials, they also look for leftover foods in the trash. This recycled food is more commonly known as “pagpag”, which literally means “to shake off” (to shake off the dirt and maggots from the food). By eating “pagpag”, the children do not get the nutritional requirements that they need. And what’s more alarming is that their fragile bodies are exposed to food-borne diseases, which often can be fatal. (Click here to know the tragic story of Marco.) Thus, having a decent meal in the “Daily Soup Kitchen” is more than just an ordinary breakfast – it can define whether they will survive or not.
We invite you to join us in our mission of “helping the poorest of the poor children have a better life”. For every T-shirt purchased, one child will have a nutritious breakfast for one week.
Let’s make this world a better place by spreading Peace, Education, Aspiration, Respect, Love, and Smiles or PEARLS – one child a time.
